Flagging (unofficially known as Hanky Code) is a system based on color coding used in both the gay and BDSM communities. It involves wearing colored handkerchiefs to indicate which sexual orientation the person wearing it belongs to. If it is worn on the left side, the person is on top (active), if it is worn on the right side, the person is on the bottom (passive).
The hanky code is believed to have originated in the 1970s in the United States. It became popular in gay nightlife as it allowed people to subtly show their sexual preferences, which in turn became common in the fetish community.
